Structured FrameMaker

Formatting Structured Documents specialized course is for users who have never used either FrameMaker or structured FrameMaker. You’ll learn how to create and modify formats, how to create Variables, and insert Text Insets and Cross-References, all in structured documents.

You’ll also work with conditional text in a structured document, and how to assemble structured documents in a book and generate a table of contents and an index.

Working in structured documents is different from unstructured FrameMaker documents. In the Authoring Structured Documents course, you’ll learn how structured documents work, how to edit structure, and how to work with attributes. You’ll also learn about elements and how their appearance is controlled by an EDD. You’ll create documents from scratch and add content using elements and attributes, including table elements, which are quite different from tables in unstructured FrameMaker documents.

Then you’ll use the document you’ve created to generate a book, a table of contents, and an index.

Defining Structure teaches you how to create the rules that determine the hierarchy of elements in a structured structured FrameMaker document. If you are familiar with SGML DTDs, an EDD contains all the structure rules of a DTD and the formatting rules of a FOSI or stylesheet. You’ll create an EDD from scratch and modify it as you encounter further structure and formatting requirements.

Importing and Exporting SGML is essential if you need to work with SGML files in structured FrameMaker. This class teaches you all the tools you’ll need to create structured FrameMaker files from SGML instances or to create SGML files from structured structured FrameMaker files. You’ll learn how the SGML Applications file works and all the parts it contains, including the Read/Write Rules file.
